A
geographic information system (GIS) enables a user to link
useful information to geographic data, such as owner information
to tax parcels, pipe size and material to a sewer line, or
descriptions and appraisal data to building locations. The
geographic data can be organized into layers and then those
layers can be overlaid with other spatial data such as digital
imagery, topography, and zoning ordinances. A GIS provides
a platform for editing, analyzing, and displaying geographic
data for use in decision-making and problem solving. You choose
what layers to combine based on what questions you need to
answer. GIS has proven itself useful in many fields such as
E911, Civil Planning, Land Management, Utility Management,
and Cadastral Mapping. The GIS aids in decision making processes,
reduces the cost of redundant spatial data, and the GIS reduces
the amount of time needed to make map and database edits.
L.I.
Smith & Associates uses a variety of GIS, CAD, mapping,
and design software on a daily basis and is familiar with
a variety of data formats and the processes to transfer data
from one format to another. We have the ability to combine,
overlay, and integrate digital imagery with spatial data.
We can scan and georeference hardcopy maps to overlay with
spatial data or digitize those hardcopy maps so that attributes
can be linked to features on that map. Our GIS Team works
closely with the other L.I. Smith departments and has the
support of those departments in all of its projects.
Recent
GIS and Parcel Mapping Projects include:
|

|
|
Henry
County, Tennessee Tax Map Conversion and Cadastral Mapping Project
Digitization of parcels from existing property identification
maps along with several quality control checks for accuracy
and validation to create a GIS tax parcel layer.
Springville
Utility District
GIS used for Address Matching to complete preliminary engineering.
Digitization of utility lines, parcel boundaries using property
identification maps, digital raster graphics
and ground truth data created a GIS layer to be used for assessment.
Department
of Finance & Administration
State Of Tennessee
Surveys for the State of Tennessee: TWRA to add to overall
GIS map.
Johns
& Collins Waterworks
Stewart County, Tennessee
Converted tax maps to digital, overlaid water lines, located
and overlaid wells and plant, created a GIS map for the water
company.
Town of Henry GIS Mapping Project
Design a GIS for the Town of Henry to include Zoning, Water,
Parcels, Roads and other Utilities. Created spatial data layers
for sanitary sewer lines based on design files created by
L.I. Smith. Overlayed the data with digital orthorectified
photography also created by L.I. Smith.
Kentucky
Counties
PVA Cadastral Mapping Projects
L.I. Smith has worked with multiple PVA County Offices in
the State of Kentucky creating and maintaining a GIS parcel
layer. Some of the work included digitizing paper tax maps,
creating and updating parcels based on deeds, plats, digital
imagery, and other spatial data, field verification of parcels,
and updating parcel information. We have worked with several
counties on a monthly or quarterly basis to help keep their
tax maps up to date.
City
of Bowling Green, Kentucky
Stormwater Mapping Project
L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc added to the City of Bowling
Green's Stormwater geodatabase, through GPS location of approximately
800 stormwater structures and field location a data collection
of approximately 1400 stormwater pipes. Data collection for
both the GPS points and pipes included descriptive attribute
information, as specified by the client.
