for over $1 billion in highway projects relating to over 450
miles of roads and bridges.
The
L.I. Smiths transportation division is comprised of
a team of selected surveyors that specialize and have extensive
experience in road and highway projects. Our registered surveyors
are licensed in seven states including Alabama, Arkansas,
Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Our

Emory
Road
Knox, Tennessee
Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation
L.I. Smith's transportation division provided surveying services
for the widening and straightening of Emory Road for the Department
of Transportation as subcontractor to Highways, Inc.
SR218
Bypass
Henry County, Tennessee
Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation
This two-lane roadway and bridge construction project consisted
of new construction with highway staking on the SR 218 Bypass
for the Department of Transportation and Vaughn Contractors.

76 and US 79
Henry County, Tennessee
Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation
This project was a four-lane widening. Construction lines
and grades were established for this 6-mile section of SR
76 and US79 from McKenzie to Routen for the Tennessee Department
of Transportation and Vaughn Contracting/Hubbs Construction
team. The plan data was checked for errors on centerline control
and the vertical datum was checked for any errors. We set
slope stakes, blue tops, dirt grades and point offsets to
control drainage structures. Controls were set for bridge
footings, column and pier alignments and grade, profiled beams
for finish deck grade and overhang, and parapet wall lines.
We also set control for the establishment of right-of-way.

Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee
Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation
LIS&A was contracted with Tennessee Department of Transportation
do a route survey for the improvement of US Hwy 412 (SR 20,
Hollywood Drive) in Jackson, Tennessee. The survey consisted
of all property owners and property lines with the written
notification that we surveying their property, and the location
of all utilities and easements. The project was tied to GPS
points set to state plane coordinate system. LIS&A was
furnished the aerial photography from the state and GIS maps
from the City of Jackson. These maps were set to the same
coordinated system and used with the field surveys as layers
to help locate and coordinated the utilities.

SR 22: Four-lane Improvement for the Tennessee Department
of Transportation and J.S. Haren Company. L.I. Smith provided
the survey control for lines and grades for the construction
of the four-lane project with turning lanes and curb and gutter.

This project was performed for the Tennessee Department of
Transportation and Hubbs Contractors. It consisted of a five-lane
intersection improvement in Jackson, Tennessee and was 1.9
miles.

Highway 51
Madison, Mississippi
Client: State of Mississippi; APAC MISS General Contractor
This
project is a 6 mile section of US Hwy 51 in Madison County,
Mississippi. The project consisted of phasing operations to
build the improvement under traffic. The majority of the project
was a four-lane with turning lanes, curb and gutter, and storm
drains.

Highway 412
Paragould, Arkansas
Client: State of Arkansas; McGeorge Contracting Co. General
Contractor
This
is a 3 mile improvement of US 412 in Greene County, Arkansas.
The project is a realignment and widening of an existing two-lane
highway with a 6-phase construction process. The project was
tied to state plane coordinates and LIS&A used GPS to
control points as the phasing operations were being performed.

Bradley County, Tennessee
Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation
LIS&A
was responsible for the route survey for a 4-mile section
of SR 60 in Bradley County, Tennessee. The project consisted
of defining the property owners and property lines along the
improved route, topography surveys of obscured areas, inverts,
size, and type of all drainage structures, the location of
all water and gas valves, location, size and inverts of sanitary
sewer manholes, the location of all overhead utilities and
the elevation of the lowest wire, the location, size, type
of driveways and culverts, the stream and flood plain cross-sections
for hydraulic studies, verification of the location of all
structures near the proposed right-of-way and the staking
of the proposed right-of-way to show the area of taking for
the new road.
